I love the movie, While You Were Sleeping. Just to refresh your memory, Lucy Moderatz saves Peter Gallagher from being hit from an oncoming train. Although he survived, he suffers a coma and was “asleep” in the hospital for quite some time. Now Peter had no idea who Lucy was, but Lucy had been watching him from afar for a while and had developed quite a crush. So while Peter was sleeping, Lucy began scheming with a fictional story as his finance’ to his family. What a shock when he woke up and realized the deception that took place without His knowledge.
Now I am definitely not suggesting that Sandra Bullock is the devil. (I think she is the coolest girl ever.) However, the Bible is clear that the devil is scheming waiting to pounce on us while we are sleeping.
1 Peter 5:8 in the Message says:
“Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up.”
In the NIV, we are told to stay alert because the “enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Ladies, he is waiting to attack our relationships, our children and our mind with thoughts of doubt, fear, insecurities and worry. I wonder what kind of deception we could wake up to find one day if are not alert to what is going on inside and around us.
What is causing us to nap and not pay attention?
- staying so busy that we have no time to slow down for prayer
- skipping out on daily bible study and meditation on God’s word
- not being intentional with our time in our relationships that matter
- having an attitude of, “I’m all good, no worries”
Can I tell you that I have fallen into each one of the scenarios at some time in my life.
What about you? Are you aware of what can be an obstacle to staying alert? I would love to hear from you. Today, let’s make it our prayer to become women who have our guard up, ready to fight the devil, and the schemes he is waiting to use against us.
