While riding home from school this week, my 7 year old son says to his friend, “Every night, my mom tells me that God made me for a purpose and He has big plans for me.” Of course, I almost wrecked out of pure joy hearing him share those words. He continued to say, “All you have to do is open your heart and God will share it with you.” Wow. I have to be honest; the “open you heart part” were his words, not mine.
Last week I shared the pause I experienced in different areas of my life. My sister, Heather, then challenged us on Created Woman to go into the world to fulfill the purpose God has for each of us. Yes, I feel confident that I am following God’s calling for me as a wife, mother and a wellness and fitness coach for women. And while I know that I am using the talents He has placed in me, the question I must continually ask myself is, “Am I opening my heart (as Zach said) for ALL that He wants to share and do in me?
That journey of purpose began for me in 2009. I was starting my new business while going through a time of deep personal and spiritual struggle. It was a difficult time in life which left me with feelings of guilt and hopelessness. During this struggle, I began reading the book Pathways to Purpose by Katie Brazelton which lead me to the realization that it was time for me deal with a few things such as
- sin in my life which I had ignored
- fear of the unknown and what others may think of me
- anxiety for the future because there were things out of my control
- perfectionism and fear of failure
I was stuck and missing out from the intimacy God desired with me and walking out the calling He had for my life. It took time and tears to deal with each one of those issues in my life that was blocking the clarity and freedom God had for me. I knew that I had to “open my heart” for God to speak to me in each of those areas if I truly desired all He had for my life. Allowing Him to do what He wants in me, is a daily act of obedience and submission.
Where are you today? Even though your story and circumstances may be different than mine, do you feel a little stuck as to God’s purpose for your life? If so, ask the Lord to show you what may be a roadblock from living out God’s purpose for your life. When you do, remember Zach’s words, “All you have to do is open your heart and God will share it with you.”
